2.5 U.S. quarts with filter change? That's weird, the manual for my 98 calls for 1.9 without filter change, 2.1 with. Anyway, like Frank says, the Savage leaks oil. Mine leaks like the Brit bikes it was patterned after. Just how it "marks its territory". If you overfill it, don't sweat it. Use a baster or such to suction out the excess. A hell of a lot easier than draining down via the sump plug under the bike.
